THE VETERANS’ CHARITY – FORCES MARCES MARCH 2012

THE VETERANS’ CHARITY – FORCES MARCES MARCH 2012

The Veterans’Charity was set up in 2008 to arrange for the meeting up at Pegasus Bridge, Benouville, Normandy, a new Memorial to the 180 “Men in Gliders” who so successfully seized the two bridges in the early hours of D-Day, 6th June 1944.

The Memorial was established and dedicated on 6th June 2009, the funds being bolstered by a 65 mile sponsored run from Tarrant Rushton to the Bridges.  It was a most successful occasion.

As a result of this, the Charity was asked to arrange another ‘Challenging Event’.  This is now called the ‘Forces March’, and is a sponsored march from Ilfracombe in North Devon to Bulford over five days in May.  We have done it twice now, in May 2010 and again in 2011.  We are winding it up for a third go, from 23td to 27th May 2012.

To help administer the 2012 Forces March, there is a need for a team of volunteers.  These should be fit, active and independent, have their own car or be able to drive a light van, and willing to camp for five nights.  Breakfast and evening meal will be provided.  Limited motor mileage allowance will be paid.

Duties may include acting as route marshals, road safety patrols, setting up camp, setting up/manning water points, picking up stragglers, general driving duties, and Fund Raising by means of bucket collections in the towns/supermarkets along the route.  Other duties may include helping run a ‘brew tent’, issuing rations, and, most important, taking charge if something goes wrong.

Wives/companions are welcome.  If you cannot come yourself, is there anyone you can recommend?  Help over a shorter period than five days will also be welcomed.

Please contact Michael Massey-Beresford on 202 7385 1983, e.mail Mssydrs@aol.com or by post to 11 Charleville Mansions, Charleville Road, London W14 9JB for further details.
