John Severn
John was born in Heanor, Derbyshire on 9th October 1950. John joined the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in 1965 and subsequently served in Germany, Nothern Ireland and the UK. On his return from his first tour of duty in Northern Ireland, he completed a 'Corporals' Course and subsequently was promoted to Lance Corporal. After a second tour to Northern Ireland John joined the Regimental Police Staff subsequently being promoted to Lance Sergent. For six months in 1972, John served at the Recruit Selection Centre in Sutton Coldfield as a Recruiting Sergent for the Regiment. Following his return to the Regiment in August 1972 he was stationed at Windsor. A further tour of Northern Ireland followed in February 1973, then after the Trooping of the Colour in that same year, John was discharged with an exemplary record. For 16 years post service, John worked for the NCB as a Welding Engineer but due to pit closures, was made redundant. For a short while thereafter he was a Driver for a Catering Butcher and for Cadman Engineering in Nottinghamshire. Moving to live in Surrey in 1999 John worked for a small Blacksmiths in Oxted, Surrey. In 2007 John and his Wife moved to Bolsover, Derbyshire where he found employment at Northern Lights where he used his skills as a Welding Engineer to construct light fittings. It was whilst working for this company that John fell ill in 2010, being diagnosed in 2011 with Esophageal cancer. John lived with this disease for a futher 2 years, finally passing away in Sir John Eastwood Hospice Sutton-in-Ashfield on the 5th June 2013, he was 62 years of age. John is survived by his Wife Angela, whom he was married to for 44 years, his four children, four Grandchildren, one Great-Grandson, three Brothers and one Sister.
