Tribute by: Elaine Jolly

John Butler was my Father who joined as a drummer boy at the age of 15. He worked his way up the ranks to eventually become Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant (RQMS). He fought in the Second World War in Germany, and after the war he served in Tripoli, London, Berlin and Dusseldorf, and came back in 1957 to Chelsea Barracks and helped with the design of the improved Barracks that was later developed. He left the Army just short of 25 years service, and we moved to Capesthorne Hall, Cheshire where he was business Manager for Colonel Sir Walter Bromley Davenport for a few years until he bought a business in Manchester. He moved back to Selby, where he was born, with my Mum. They sadly divorced and he spent his last days in Elgin, Scotland with his second Wife. He developed Prostate Cancer and died in hospital on September 10th 2012 aged 93. He is buried in Elgin Cemetery.
