Tribute by: Mrs B Marples

My wonderful Father died in December 2001, aged 85 years.

He worked for Mobil Oil Refinery for 30 years, but I think his happiest memories are of his time in the Grenadiers Guards.

He joined the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards at the age of twenty, in June 1936 and became a recruit at Caterham Barracks until December 1936, when he was moved to Chelsea barracks until September 1937, where he did Royal Guard duties at Buckingham palace, St James palace & night guard at the Bank of England. In May 1937, his Battalion was chosen to find a Guard of Honour for the Coronation of King George VI.

On Sept 14th 1939, he was promoted to Sergeant and moved to France in the 1st Guards Brigade. He was taken prisoner at the beginning of WW2 at Messine, Belgium, and spent five years as POW in Thorn, Poland. This is in Remembrance of a proud soldier, my Father, Peter Leigh
