C/Sgt A V Axworthy (Chopper) was born in London on 23 July 1937. In 1953, he joined the Grenadier Guards aged 15. He joined the 3rd Bn GG Drums, serving in Egypt, Cyprus, Cameroons, Germany and many other countries. In 1968, he performed the role of lone drummer during that years Trooping of the Colour and in 1969 he spent time in Trucial State - now known as United Arab Emirates upon his return he moved to Nottingham to become an Army Recruiter at the George Street and then Victoria Centre. 1977 saw him taking over the management of the Worksop Recruiting Office. During his time serving he was awarded the British Empire Medal, Meritorious Service Medal. He retired from Army life in 1992 at the age of 55. After leaving the Army he went on to work as a Civil Servant in Nottingham for 10 years. He spent most of his spare time fundraising for local charities predominantly as a member of the Nottingham Branch of the Grenadier Guards Assc. and he was also a keen collector of Grenadier Guard medals, ephemera, medals and photographs. He was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease in the mid 1980s despite this diagnosis he never allowed it to slow him down. He died 23 August 2011 after a short spell in hospital. He is survived by his 3 daughters, his wife whom he married 6 May 1960 survived him for 3 years.
